The Nation has learned that the Bush Administration and the Pentagon have issued orders for a major “strike group” of ships, including the nuclear aircraft carrier Eisenhower as well as a cruiser, destroyer, frigate, submarine escort and supply ship, to head for the Persian Gulf, just off Iran’s western coast.
According to the article, the deployment is ahead of the normal rotation for the carrier group.
The fact that an attack on Iran would be military and diplo-political stupidity of a positively supernatural order must not be allowed to obscure the effects of the near-total reality distortion field now centered at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave and the boyish delights that can be taken in a Rovian October Surprise.
The only thing that gives me hope this is all a bad joke is that The Nation quotes the Navy’s spokesperson, our old friend Lt. Kafka, now apparently no longer working at Guantanamo but serving up news from Norfolk.
What frightens me is that Bushco has realized that “limited” attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities is not a viable option, so the strategy has been changed to create the conditions under which Iran would be justified in the eyes of the world in engaging in a massive pre-emptive strike based on the “imminent threat” doctrine — a circumstance which would then justify the US in launching “total war” against Iran.
Americans are stupid enough to believe that Iran’s attack was an act of agression, rather than a legitmate defense against an imminent threat (especially since hundreds if not thousands of american military personnel would be “martyred” in a pre-emptive assault), but the bottom line here is that Bush is willing to treat American military personnel as mere cannon fodder whose sole function is to die to create the conditions under which Americans would support the compete destruction of Iran without regard to its consequences.
Am I missing something here? If we attack Iran wouldn’t we be de-stabilizing the entire region? Wouldn’t the price of oil then take a big jump? So Karl Rove’s October surprise is sending us back to $3+ for a gallon of gas? I can’t imagine that would make too many voters vote Republican. (And I’d sure like to think that the same majority of Americans who are fed up with the Iraq war would be equally outraged over an attack on Iran … who knows, they might even see through all the posturing and demand Bush be impeached, especially if American casualties were high.)
