This was a classy move by the President — Obama visits White House press room on birthday:
On the day he turned 48, President Barack Obama decided to splash a little celebration on someone with whom he shares the birthday: legendary White House correspondent Helen Thomas, now a columnist with Hearst Newspapers. She turned 89 on Tuesday.
Helen Thomas is not, based on my one short conversation with her, a deep thinker. But for two generations she has had her eye on the essentials and remains as tenacious as any of the best reporters of yore. And she calls them as she sees them — no fakery.
I wonder if they compared birth certificates? :p
Why was it “classy”?
Why not invite all the children in the DC school system that share his birthday to the White House? Helen Thomas is a Washingtonian “elite”, with ample access to both the White House and Obama.
Thomas is widely regarded as anti-Israel biased and accused by many of being an anti-Semite. Kind of reminds me of Reverend Wright. There are a lot of folks who don’t think this is the kind of person Obama should be chummy with. As noted above, aside from the “class” issue, there are plenty of other people more deserving to break bread with him.
P.S. More or less classy than Special Olympics bowling?
P.S.S. More or less classy than impersonating Sir Mix-A-Lot in France?
P.S.S.S. More or less classy than giving the Queen of England an iPod?
It was classy compared to, and in the shadow of, the various ways in which the previous administration went out of its way to show contempt for Ms. Thomas.
I have never seen anything to suggest Ms. Thomas is anti-Semitic, and I think you might wish to think twice before throwing around accusations of racism.
Gee, it wouldn’t have anything to do with some of the things Helen “the troll” Thomas had to say about the previous administration?
Speaking of class, will Barack bring these gentlemen to the white house lawn to iron out their differences on race? http://pajamasmedia.com/instapundit/83116/
