My E-Mail Is Hosed

My email at U.M. is 98% hosed. Random emails get to me quickly—but not many. Other ones get to me a day late. Many seem to bounce; for all I know some vanish. Outgoing mail from my UM account is also delayed or vanishing.

This is, to understate, very frustrating.

And the soonest I can hope for a fix is next week, since the entire IT dept. is doing things for student accounts this week.

If the fix doesn't come next week, I'm moving my center of email gravity to something private.

Abu Aardvark Reads the Arabic Press

Abu Aardvark: Bin Laden located? don't know why I'm not seeing this reported or discussed anywhere, but much of the Arab press is reporting that, according to the Interior Minister, Pakistan has narrowed down bin Laden's location to a specific point along the Pakistan-Afghan border. For Arabic speakers, here's the story on al Arabiya. Maybe it's not being reported because it isn't true… I dunno. Most of the stories coming up on Google News are of the “bin Laden trail still cold” variety. But I'm seeing it in the Arab media and not in the English, so thought I'd pass it on.

Hey, I just had a crazy thought. Wouldn't it be just wild if they managed to catch bin Laden just in time for the Republican convention? Or, even wilder, a few weeks before the election? Wow, that would just be crazy good luck for Bush. Crazy!

It would be nice to see a newspaper look into this, wouldn't it?

Is This What I Have to Look Forward To?

Brad's eldest is 14 years old, and guest blogs this evening, telling tales (well, a tale) on dad: The Rice Incident (Not Condoleeza).

My eldest is almost 11. Is this what I have to look foward to?

(See also Children Who Blog, although they don't much these days.)

New Student Blogger

UM has another student blogger, Jason Wolf, who writes the ominously-named random acts of meanness.

And, indeed, I have a bone to pick with this new UM 1L already. In one of his first posts he disses Scotty's Landing, calling it the “worst restaurant on earth”. I'm sorry, it's not even close. Indeed, the food is perfectly OK, certainly no worse than lots of other places, and the view of the ocean and the Miami skyline is spectactular. Try it again some time when the weather is nicer.

Update: Consider, for example, Denny's, “Always open, always awful.”

Eric Muller’s Souvenir of Vienna

Eric Muller shares a picture of his souvenir of Vienna. Even in reproduction it is, as he says, “so damn sad to look at.”

As it happens, I read Eric's post shortly after seeing this one. The connection is left as an exercise for the reader.

What He Said

Joho the Blog: W doesn't tip—The ultimate trivialization of democracy or telling character detail? You be the judge. (And, yes, by running the link to this video, I am definitely having it both ways. Feels good.)

My view? Like the old joke goes, some of my friends are for it, some of my friends are against it, and I stand with my friends.
