Here’s an Eisenhower quote from 1949 unearthed by Pogo Was Right:
If all that Americans want is security, they can go to prison. They’ll have enough to eat, a bed and a roof over their heads. But if an American wants to preserve his dignity and his equality as a human being, he must not bow his neck to any dictatorial government.
Hard to imagine Ike approving of the TSA.
Of course, the context of the quote is relevant. The comments seem to be in reference to social security and “socialized medicine” according to various Google Books items that cite the quote, though the 12/9/1948 NYT article that reports the remarks doesn’t go into details, but simply talks about not being tempted by paternalism. Of course Eisenhower himself was the beneficiary of “socialized medicine” in the form of army healthcare, so his objection is a bit odd.
The fact that you think this quote is AT ALL contrary to a modern conservative view held by many/most of these GOP members of Congress, and certainly in America as a whole, shows that you either:
1). Don’t understand the quote.
2). have no idea of what conservatives or the GOP believes and are just repeating something someone else said.
Probably both.
